On the last day of April, which was Child Abuse Awareness Month, members of the Stephens County Child Welfare Board and others gathered in the courthouse for a candlelight vigil, honoring the local children who are in foster care or other parts of the legal system due to abuse or neglect.
The Stephens County Commissioners Court accepted the resignation of Constable Brian McBride on Monday, May 4, and moved to appoint Justin Shockley to fill the remainder of the term. McBride’s term expires on Dec. 31.
After the election on Saturday, May 2, Breckenridge will soon have a new mayor and one new city commissioner, but the rest of the city commission and the local school board will remain the same.
Sparks were flying as high school welding students from across the region, including Breckenridge High School, demonstrated their skills in a bench-building contest last week in the parking lot at Texas State Technical College.
Election Day for the Breckenridge City Commission and Breckenridge school board, as well as the Fort Griffin Special Utility District board will be Saturday, May 2.
Breckenridge will offer plenty to do this weekend with the annual Stephens County Frontier Days scheduled for today and Saturday, May 1-2, and the Stephens County Ranch Rodeo planned for May 1-3.
City of Breckenridge employees are at the site of a recent sewage discharge into Gunsolus Creek today, working under a TCEQ plan to clean up the sludge that has settled to the bottom of the creek following last week’s discharge.
Breckenridge City Manager Cynthia Northrop has been named as one of the three finalists for the City of Marshall’s city manager position.
The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) has launched an investigation into the discharge of partially treated sewage from the City of Breckenridge Wastewater Treatment Plant into Gunsolus Creek on Friday night, April 24, but the safety of the water in the area has not been confirmed by any of the agencies that typically handle such situations.
