BISD school supply lists available now
The first day of school for Breckenridge Independent School District is just a little more than two weeks away, on Wednesday, Aug. 7, and school supply lists are available to help parents and kids get what they need.
Depending the on the grade level, the lists range from the traditional No. 2 pencils and 24-count boxes of crayons to the more modern headphones/earbuds and a wireless mouse. The lists are included at the end of this article.
Backpacks will be allowed at South Elementary this year, and the Breckenridge Junior High officials recommend that students go to the office to get a locker assignment so that they don’t have to carry everything all day.
There are several upcoming BISD events for students and/or their parents:
- All students – new and returning – need to enroll through the school district’s online registration process by Aug. 1. Additionally, parents of students who need to ride a bus to and from school need to fill out the BISD Bus Enrollment Form online for each child who will ride the bus.
- Meet the Teacher for East Elementary and South Elementary will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Aug. 2, for homeroom teacher assignment and schedule pickup.
- Bronco Roundup for incoming sixth graders at Breckenridge Junior High will begin at 5 p.m. on Aug. 5, at BJHS.
- Incoming seventh and eighth grade students can pick up schedules anytime from 10 a.m. to noon on Aug. 2 at BJHS.
- Incoming 11th and 12th grade students can pick up schedules from 9 a.m. to noon on Aug. 1 at Breckenridge High School. Incoming ninth and 10th grade students can pick up schedules from 9 a.m. to noon on Aug. 2 at BHS.

Items needed include pencils, erasers, pens, markers, crayons, colored pencils, highlighters, dry erase markers, notebooks, binders, folders, paper, composition notebooks, glue, glue sticks, wipes, tissues, Ziploc bags and backpacks.
STATE OF TEXAS SALES TAX HOLIDAY
Although it’s a couple of days after the first day of school in Breckenridge, the State of Texas will offer back-to-school shoppers a break on Aug. 9-11 with the annual Sales Tax Holiday.
On a variety of items, including backpacks, clothing, shoes, school supplies and more, there will be no sales tax charged, saving local shoppers about 8 percent on their shopping expenses. There is a complete list of what does and does not qualify for the exemption on the Texas Comptroller’s website (click here).
Help support the Breckenridge Texan’s local news coverage mission
The Breckenridge Texan, a non-profit news outlet serving Breckenridge and Stephens County, Texas, has launched its annual NewsMatch fundraising campaign, running through Dec. 31, 2024.
As a non-profit news outlet, the Breckenridge Texan depends on donations, in addition to ad sales, to fund daily operations, including website costs, freelance writers, and basic office expenses. The organization aims to raise $4,000, which could be tripled to $12,000 through various matching programs, including the NewsMatch program and the Rural Partner Fund, which is supported by several major foundations.
Founded in 2017 by journalists Tony Pilkington and Carla McKeown, the Breckenridge Texan provides daily local news coverage, weekly newsletters, photo galleries, a community calendar, and obituaries. The outlet serves both local residents and people outside the community seeking information about Breckenridge and Stephens County, including potential new residents and businesses. They chose the non-profit structure to maintain local control of news coverage while minimizing the financial burden on the community.
In addition to regular news coverage, the Breckenridge Texan also offers:
A weekly newsletter that delivers a roundup of recent stories via email every Monday
Photo galleries from local events
A Calendar of Events, which lists upcoming community activities
Local obituaries
And more
Donations can be made through the Breckenridge Texan website’s donate page, the NewsMatch campaign page, or by mail to Breckenridge Texan, P.O. Box 1228, Breckenridge, Texas 76424. The organization operates under the fiscal sponsorship of the Institute for Nonprofit News (INN), which is the name that will appear on donation billing statements.
