On National Signing Day, Feb. 7, Breckenridge High School’s Chloe Whitmire officially signed to attend and play softball at Dallas Christian College.

She was joined by her teammates on the Lady Buckaroos softball team, coaches, teachers, family and friends in the foyer of the BHS athletic facility on Wednesday afternoon.

“It’s exciting, nerve wracking, but I’m excited. Really excited,” Whitmire said about signing with Dallas Christian College.

She said playing for the Lady Bucks has helped her to get ready for the future. “It definitely prepare me for everything, and it made me realize that I actually want to keep playing,” the BHS senior said. “I love all the girls here and everything.”

BHS softball coach Cynthia Herrera has coached Whitmire for the past two years but has known her since she was a little girl and the coach gave her lessons. “She contributes a lot to this team and, honestly, there’s a lot on her shoulders every day and every time we step on that field,” Herrera said. “Chloe, I’m super excited…the best is yet to come.”

Breckenridge Independent School District Athletic Director Casey Pearce was at the event on Wednesday and said playing sports at the college level requires a commitment from the athletes that is similar to working at a job, but he thinks Breckenridge students are up to the challenge. “I think they’ve got a grit and tenacity about them, and it gives them a chance to compete and stick it out whenever it gets rough,” he said.

Whitmire, who pitches for the Lady Bucks, and the team have been scrimmaging since late January and will start pre-district games on Tuesday, Feb. 13, in Breckenridge against Springtown. The district games will begin on March 5 in Breckenridge against Millsap.
