April 3 is deadline to register to vote in city, hospital elections

The deadline to register to vote in the upcoming Breckenridge City Commission election and the Stephens Memorial Hospital District board election will be Thursday, April 3. The elections will be held on May 3.
In order to vote in a specific election, citizens must be registered in the appropriate district. For example, to vote in the City Commission election, voters must live within the city limits of Breckenridge, and to vote in the hospital board election, voters must live within the Stephens Memorial Hospital District.
To confirm your voter registration status, you can visit the Texas Secretary of State’s Am I Registered? portal, which allows you to look up your voter registration record in the statewide voter registration database. In Stephens County, you can register to vote in the Tax Appraiser-Collector’s office in the courthouse.
Texans who have recently changed their name or moved can update their voter registration online through Texas.gov. Click here to update your voter registration information online.
You are eligible to register to vote if:
- You are a United States citizen;

- You are at least 17 years and 10 months old on the date your voter registration application is submitted, and you are 18 years of age on Election Day;
- You are not a convicted felon (you may be eligible to vote if you have completed your sentence, probation, and parole); and
- You have not been declared by a court exercising probate jurisdiction to be either totally mentally incapacitated or partially mentally incapacitated without the right to vote.
City Commission
For the City Commission, Place 3, currently held by Vince Moore, and Place 4, currently held by Rob Durham, who was appointed to the position by the City Commission in November 2024 after Gary Mercer resigned, are on the ballot this year.
For Place 3, Moore filed for re-election, and he will face three challengers: Scott Ensey, Richard “Dickey” Russell and Junior Fernandez. For Place 4, Paul Huntington and Tony Patterson have filed to run.
Stephens Memorial Hospital District
There are four candidates for the three positions that are up for election this year on the Stephens Memorial Hospital District Board.
The three incumbents — Tom Echols, Kaylee Curtis and Gregg Goodall — all filed for re-election, and John Powell also filed to run for a position on the board. All positions are at-large.
BISD Board of Trustees
On Monday night, March 17, the Breckenridge Independent School District’s Board of Trustees voted to cancel their election since there were no opposed positions.
Jimmy McKay and Carrol Kanady were the only candidates for Place 4 and Place 5, respectively. Place 3, that is currently held by Roy Russell, had no candidates, and the school board will appoint someone to the position at a later date.
