BHS theater to present ‘Wit’ for community on Sunday, April 30
On Sunday, April 30, in Bailey Auditorium, the Breckenridge High School Theatre department will present “Wit,” the one-act play they are taking to the State competition next week.
The local production will begin at 3 p.m., and admission will cost $5 per person (check or cash only).
On Saturday, May 6, the Buckaroo team will be the first 3A school to perform in the State contest in Austin, going on stage at 3 p.m. The competition will take place in the Austin ISD Performing Arts Center (PAC), located at 1500 Barbara Jordan Blvd. in Austin.
There will be eight 3A schools performing, separated into two sessions. The first session begins at 3 p.m. and includes BHS (“Wit”), Randolph High School-Universal City (“We All Fall Down”), White Oak High School (“The Tragedy of Hamlet”), and Mount Vernon High School (“A Monster Calls”). The second session will begin at 6:30 p.m. and includes Canadian High School (“Moon Over Buffalo”), Hempstead High School (“Oedipus El Rey”), Van Vleck High School (“Chemical Imbalance: A Jekyll and Hyde Play”), and Industrial High School-Vanderbilt (“The Sparrow”).
Tickets to attend the State contest in Austin cost $18 per person (children age 2 and younger will be admitted at no charge) per session. Tickets must be purchased through the UIL online box office (click here).
In a post on the BHS Theatre Facebook page, theater teacher Tucker Young detailed the production by the numbers:
- 18 students made the team
- 5 seniors, 5 juniors, 6 sophomores, 2 freshmen
- 12 actors on stage
- 5 technicians backstage
- 1 alternate, ready to step in at a moment’s notice
- 3 directors (no director backstage during performance)
- 20 weeks of rehearsal, 8 hours each week
- 6,000 words memorized
- 17 costume pieces
- 12 pieces of scenery/ an IV Pole/ and a Crash Cart
- 4 lighting specials
- 21 sound cues
- 6 levels of competition (Zone, District, Bi-District, Area, Regionals, State)
- 7 min. to build the set, 40 min. to perform, 7 min. to strike
- Final 8 in the game
“It’s so much more than ‘just a play’…Theatre is OUR SPORT,” he said in the post. “We work physically, mentally, and emotionally to bring these characters and this story to life, with the goal of sharing a bit about life in the process. Having you in the audience fuels the performers’ energy and prepares them for the biggest stage in Texas theatre! We hope you will join us Sunday, April 30, at 3 p.m. for the final performance before we represent Breckenridge ISD at State on May 6 at the Austin ISD PAC!
