Breckenridge High School’s One-Act Play team wins first place at Bi-District, prepares for Area contest

For the first time since 2014, the Breckenridge High School One-Act Play team will compete at the Area contest, following their first place win at the Bi-District competition last week.

Under the direction of BHS theater teacher Tucker Young, along with fellow BISD teachers Mindy West and Shelby Copeland, the BHS theater group performed “Wit,” a play by American playwright Margaret Edson about a university English professor who is dying from ovarian cancer.

At Friday’s contest in Graham, the Breckenridge students competed against five other high schools for three spots in the Area competition. The Breckenridge team received first place, followed by Dublin High School, second; Vernon High School, third; and Holliday High School, alternate.

Additionally, the Breckenridge crew won Best Technical Crew; Avery Rodgers received Best Performer of the competition for her role as Vivian Bearing; Trevin McAlmond received the Outstanding Technician award for sound; Antley Rodgers received Honorable Mention — All-Star Cast for his role as Dr. Jason Posner; and Zaea Ragle received Honorable Mention — All-Star Cast for her role as Susie Monahan.

  • Technician/Student/Fellow/Ensemble – Preslie Malcuit
  • Technician/Student/Fellow/Ensemble – Camila Palacios
  • Directors: Tucker Young, Mindy West, Shelby Copeland

According to the UIL website, the Area contest for 3A districts 5, 6, 7 and 8 will be April 1 at Clyde High School. Teams that advance at the Area level will go to the Region contest, and the finalists at Region will go to the State competition in Austin in May.

They have been working on the play since last November when the cast was picked, and they also competed and advanced at the Zone and District levels.
