Breckenridge’s water woes continue as city crews work to repair secondary leak
Update: At 1:45 p.m. Thursday, May 14, the City of Breckenridge posted the following statement on the City’s Facebook page:
“Public Works crews have completed repairs to the secondary water line break located at Jackson and Hullum. Valves have now been turned back on, which should restore water service to customers in the affected area.
The next step in the process will be for crews to collect water samples tomorrow for required testing. We are hopeful that results will be received by Saturday, allowing the Boil Water Notice to be lifted as quickly as possible.
We would like to extend our sincerest gratitude to our entire Public Works crew for their dedication, hard work, and the many long hours they have worked to address these issues and restore service to our residents. Their commitment to this community does not go unnoticed, and we are incredibly appreciative of their efforts.
Thank you to our residents for your continued patience and understanding throughout this process.”
Additionally, the City has posted a second Boil Water Notice for a neighborhood in northwest Breckenridge. Click here to see that notice.

After initial repairs were made to a water line break in southeast Breckenridge on Wednesday night, May 13, the City of Breckenridge has turned off water to the area again today, Thursday, May 14, to repair a leak in an old pipe adjacent to the one that was hit by a fiber-optics company.
“The intersection of Hullum and Jackson will need further repairs,” Breckenridge City Manager Cynthia Northrop said in a statement this morning. “An old 2-inch cast iron line that runs North and South over the 6-inch line that the contactors hit yesterday is now leaking. This 2-inch line is very fragile. Crews are preparing to cut and dress for repairs, which requires us to turn the water off.”

The statement specified that the affected area is the southeast quadrant of the city, identified as south of Walker Street (U.S Highway 180 East) and east of Breckenridge Avenue (U.S. Highway 183 South).
“Our goal is to complete these repairs as soon as possible,” Northrop said in the statement. “As a reminder, to ensure safety in the area, citizens are not allowed in the work zone and please allow our crews to work instead of engaging in conversations.”
The situation started Wednesday morning when a fiber-optics company was digging an installation trench to lay cable and hit a water line at the intersection of South Jackson and East Hullum, according to City officials.
City crews struggled to find a cut-off valve, and the water tower on the east side of town was drained before the leak was stopped.
Many residents in the area were without water or had low water pressure for most of the day. At about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, the City announced that the leak had been fixed and water service was restored.
However, this morning, the second leak referenced above was discovered.
The southeast section of Breckenridge remains under a boil water notice. Click here for the details on that notice.
