The Breckenridge Police Department responded to a call at 9 a.m. this morning, Sunday, Oct. 19, about a man with a bullet wound to the head at the Conquistador Apartments in the 1100 block of West Elliott Street, according to Breckenridge Police Chief Blake Johnson.

The call to the police was made by a friend of the victim, who found him with the wound, and a gun was found at the scene, but its involvement in the shooting has not been determined, the police chief said.

“We found a male in the apartment with a bullet wound to the head. EMS attempted to try to bring him back, but the efforts failed. The person died here at the scene,” Johnson said.

During the investigation, local police decided there were some questions that weren’t being answered, so they asked the Texas Rangers to assist in the investigation, which is still ongoing, he said.

“The Rangers came and assisted us with the investigation. We’ve gone through an extensive amount of questioning and things. At this point, we’re unable to say with any certainty what we feel like the outcome is,” Johnson said.

Based on the current investigation, the BPD is “not putting out any persons of interest or any suspects at this point, because we’re still in the early part of the investigation,” the police chief said.

The police are working to determine whether the death is a suicide, homicide or accident. “All I know is, I have a person with a gunshot. … We’re going to wait for the autopsy and see if that will give us a little more clarity to be able to say what we think it is, but at this point, we can’t really say whether it’s self-inflicted or whether somebody else did it,” Johnson said.

The police chief said he wants the Breckenridge community to know that the BPD is investigating all aspects of the shooting and is not jumping to conclusions.

“But, I don’t see any reason to believe that there’s a public safety issue for the community,” Johnson said.
