City of Breckenridge issues another advisory as sewer system overflows again

For the second time in the past week, the City of Breckenridge has issued a public notice regarding the overflow of sewage in the city, and this time there are several overflow locations throughout the city.

A little after 7 p.m. tonight, Tuesday, June 10, City Manager Cynthia Northrop issued a notice explaining that a “Sanitary Sewer Overflow (SSO) has occurred caused by Inflow and Infiltration and an inability to keep up with the Flow at Lift Station #1.”

According to the media advisory, the City of Breckenridge Public Works department is notifying the public that a Sanitary Sewer Overflow has occurred from a manhole east of Breckenridge Avenue (800 block), caused by Inflow and Infiltration (due to the heavy rains our area has been receiving) and an inability to keep up with the flow at Lift Station #1. That is the same location as the overflow last week.

The flow appears to have traveled southeast through the Walker Branch Drainage approximately 140 meters before entering the Gunsolus Creek, the advisory states. No fish kills are noted, at this time. The estimated discharge is between 81,000-121,000 gallons. The overflow occurred approximately between 6 a.m. and 4 p.m. today, June 10, according to the City.

Several other significant sewer overflows totaling in the thousands of gallons were active during that time, as well, and are noted on the map below. Crews have marked the areas with orange safety cones and are currently working to sanitize the affected areas. Residents should consider areas of the Walker Branch Drainage, downstream of North Shelton and West Elm, contaminated and are encouraged to stay out of and away from those areas.

Crews are working to sanitize, dilute, and pump out affected areas, Northrop said in the advisory. A report has been filed with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ).
