Several recent meetings have been standing-room-only with local community members, City employees and others in attendance. The former configuration of the room had space for about 18-20 chairs, in addition to the tables and chairs for the commissioners and City staff who participate in the meetings.

The remodel project pushed back the east wall of the Commission Chambers, the wall that was behind the commissioners, adding about 12 feet to the room. The expansion required the removal of a room that had been used for storage.

The expanded room now has about 32 seats in it, with room for another row or two of chairs.

“We wanted to make it so that people can attend the meetings comfortably,” City Manager Cynthia Northrop said Friday morning.

Additionally, the commissioners’ tables and chairs are now on a slightly raised dais, making it easier for them to see everyone in the room and allowing all of the attendees to see the commissioners better. A third screen will be added to the room so that everyone can see the charts and images that are usually projected during City Commission meetings.

The room is also used as a meeting room for the Breckenridge Planning and Zoning Commission and the Board of Adjustments.

The City took bids on the job and awarded to the project to the low bidder, David Stowe, Northrop said. Part of the requirements for the project was that the work had to be completed between City Commission meetings. Work on the renovation started immediately after the March 4 meeting and was finished in time for the April 1 meeting.

The meeting on Tuesday, April 1, is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. at the City offices, located at 105 N. Rose Ave. Entrance is through the building’s northside door. Click here to see the agenda for the meeting.
