No one was injured when a small plane crashed into a wooded area just northeast of the Stephens County Airport this afternoon, Monday, Feb. 17.
Shortly before 2:45 p.m., the Cessna 180 crashed onto private property on the north side of FM 2231, about a mile east of U.S. Highway 183 South. There were two people aboard the plane that was on its way to land at the local airport when the engine stopped less than half a mile from the north end of the runway, according to those on the scene.
Stephens County Sheriff Kevin Roach said that when emergency responders arrived on the scene, they found the plane upside down in the pasture and the pilot and passenger standing outside the aircraft. “All the occupants were fine,” he said. “They were checked by medics and cleared.”
The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration will investigate the incident and then the debris will be cleaned up, Roach said.
At this time, the cause of the crash is not known. At the time of the crash, the weather conditions were clear with a southerly wind of 16-20 mph with gusts up to 24 mph, according to the National Weather Service.
Responding to the scene of the plane crash were the Stephens County Sheriff’s Office, the Texas Department of Public Safety, Sacred Cross EMS, the Breckenridge Fire Department and the Stephens County Constable/Fire Marshal. The NTSB and the FAA were expected to arrive later.
