If the weather predictions are accurate, Breckenridge, along with most of Texas, will be in for some cold temperatures over the next few days, but Stephens County officials are prepared to offer a warm place for local residents.

Due to the forecast by the National Weather Service, Stephens County Emergency Management will open a Warming Station at the Stephens County Law Enforcement Center, located at 210 E. Dyer St. in Breckenridge.

Multiple days of frigid weather are expected following today’s arctic front, and expected wind chills may be in the single digits and teens, David Leonard, Stephens County Emergency Management Coordinator, said in a news release.

The Warming Center will be available and remain open to the public until Friday morning. Additional facilities may be opened, based on citizen demand and changing weather situations, he said.

The Office of Emergency Management is working in conjunction with the county Sheriff’s Office and Stephens County Judge Michael Roach to ensure that local citizens are safe and warm.

According to the NWS, today’s temperatures should reach a high of about 45 degrees, but overnight, it could drop to as low as 20 degrees. On both Sunday, Jan. 19, and Monday, Jan. 20, the high is expected to be 36 degrees, followed by an overnight low of 19 degrees. For Tuesday, Jan. 21, the forecast is for a high of 37 with an overnight low of 23.

By Wednesday, Jan. 22, the high is expected to climb into the 50s. Daily highs in the 50s are expected to continue Wednesday through Friday with overnight lows still dipping into the 20s.

The NWS reports a 20 percent chance of snow showers in Stephens County on Monday, Jan. 20. Eastern and southeastern Texas, including Houston, have a higher chance of freezing precipitation than Breckenridge does.

The National Weather Service offers the following tips for the upcoming cold front:

  • Dress in layers including a hat, face mask, and gloves if you must go outside.
  • Keep pets indoors as much as possible.
  • Make sure outdoor animals have a warm, dry shelter, food, and unfrozen water.
  • Make frequent checks on vulnerable family, friends, and neighbors.
  • Ensure portable heaters are used correctly. Do not use generators or grills inside.
