Rotarians distribute dictionaries to Breckenridge third graders
Breckenridge third graders were eagerly flipping through their new dictionaries Thursday afternoon, checking out the longest word in the English language, looking up who was president of the United States the year the students were born, and practicing signing their names in American Sign Language.
The dictionaries — officially titled “A Student’s Dictionary” — were distributed to all local third grade students by members of the Rotary Club of Breckenridge. As the group of Rotarians traveled from room to room on the third grade hall at South Elementary, Les Strickland walked the students through their new resource books.
“These books are yours to keep,” he told each of the six classrooms. “Write your name in the front; that way if you lose it, you can get it back.”
He had them turning to page 373 to see the longest word; then, they flipped to page 429 to see a list of the U.S. Presidents. And, finally, they turned to page 538 to see the sign language alphabet.
“There is so much information in this book!” Strickland told the kids, who were busy looking up things and sharing them with each other.
