On Tuesday, April 14, 2026, a crowd gathered on the courthouse lawn in Breckenridge as Stephens County became the 37th Texas county to install a bronze replica of Travis’ “Victory or Death” letter dispatched from the Alamo in 1836. The ceremony also celebrated the 100th anniversary of the Stephens County courthouse, which was built in 1926.

On Tuesday, April 14, Stephens County officials will host a two-part celebration at the courthouse: the Courthouse Centennial and the Alamo Letter Monument unveiling.
The Stephens County Commissioners Court voted Monday, Feb. 24, to approve the installation of a bronze plaque featuring the words of William Barret Travis’s famous Alamo letter on courthouse grounds.
