Despite the small crowd at the National Theatre on Saturday night, David Lewis put on one of the best shows of this year’s Performance Series, hosted by the Friends of Historic Breckenridge.

Although there were just a few dozen people in the audience, it was a supportive and oftentimes vocal crowd, joining in to sing with Lewis and occasionally clapping along with the music. He also entertained the local crowd with a few Dwight Yoakum-style dance moves, occasionally coercing his fellow band members into joining him for some fancy footwork across the stage.

Originally from Bellville, a small town just west of Houston, Lewis was joined on stage by his sister, Emily Leuschner on drums. Other members of the band included Eric Neeley on bass, Jackson Wreden on fiddle and Preston Turner on guitar.

Lewis opened the show with his high-energy “Holdin’ on and Lettin’ go,” segueing into one original song after another. From time to time, Lewis tossed in a countryfied version of a well-known tune, such as ZZ Top’s “Sharp Dressed Man” and Jerry Lee Lewis’ “Great Balls of Fire.” He even showed off his blues chops with Stevie Ray Vaughn’s “Texas Flood.”

His original songs cover the range of traditional country music, from true love (“My Kind of Girl”) to heartache (“Oh Walls”). According to his website, Lewis wrote and co-produced his debut album “Country Music Therapy” in 2019 when he was a senior in high school. He recently released his “Barstool Sermons” online with autographed vinyl versions available to pre-order online.

Throughout the evening, Lewis wove his personal story into the show, letting the locals know that he grew up in a place not too different than Breckenridge. “I was raised out on a ranch and raised on Jesus Christ and country music, y’all,” Lewis said as he traded his guitar for the keyboard for a couple of songs. “A long time ago, I felt like the Lord called me to play country music. And I remember … it was in high school, and I had played worship music up until that point, and played little opries here and there around Texas. And I remember praying real hard about it, because it was just such a strong pull and easy to see this is what I was meant to do and what I was sure he called me to do.”

The 90-minute set included his recently recorded “Floorboard Full of Roses,” which will be released on April 10, and he wrapped up with “Ain’t Gonna Change Me.” Lewis introduced that last song, explaining that he wrote it on a trip to Nashville. “I decided to write a vow to myself. I said, ‘David, remember your roots. Remember where you come from, and that’s Texas,'” he told the Breckenridge crowd.

Lewis and the band’s concert was the last show in the 2025-26 Performance Series, which also featured Reid Bros.; 3 Fools on 3 Stools; Maggie Amini and Kevin Singleton;  and Bleu Edmonson.
