Fambro, Warren win in Stephens County Commissioner races; proposed sales tax fails

The Stephens County Commissioners Court will continue to look the same, after the two incumbents, David Fambro in Precinct 1 and Will Warren in Precinct 3, were re-elected over the two write-in candidates in today’s election.
In Precinct 1, Fambro garnered 715 of the total votes, with write-in candidate Chad Jones getting 137 votes.
In Precinct 3, Warren received 531 votes, while write-in candidate Houston Satterwhite had 123 votes.
Those were the only two contested local races.
Also on the ballot, but unopposed, were incumbents:
- Sheriff Kevin Roach, 3,379 votes;
- County Attorney Gary Trammel, 3,240 votes;
- County Treasurer Kelsey Cornwall, 3,265 votes;
- County Constable Wayne McMullen, 3,210 votes.
Also running unopposed was Crystal Shook, who received 3,275 votes for the County Tax Assessor-Collector office.
The 90th Judicial District Judge, Phillip Gregory, who ran unopposed, was re-elected with 3,231 votes in Stephens County and a total of 10,600 in the district; and, the 90th Judicial District Attorney Dee Peavy, who also ran unopposed, was re-elected with 3,225 votes in Stephens County and a total of 10.578 in the district.
Stephens County residents living outside the city limits of Breckenridge had an opportunity to vote on a proposed sales tax for a designated special district created for the proposed tax. By a margin of almost 2-to-1, the voters rejected the proposed tax. There were 1,207 votes against the tax and 612 votes for it. Click here to read a previous article about the tax.

The Breckenridge Texan, a non-profit news outlet serving Breckenridge and Stephens County, Texas, has launched its annual NewsMatch fundraising campaign, running through Dec. 31, 2024.
As a non-profit news outlet, the Breckenridge Texan depends on donations, in addition to ad sales, to fund daily operations, including website costs, freelance writers, and basic office expenses. The organization aims to raise $4,000, which could be tripled to $12,000 through various matching programs, including the NewsMatch program and the Rural Partner Fund, which is supported by several major foundations.
Founded in 2017 by journalists Tony Pilkington and Carla McKeown, the Breckenridge Texan provides daily local news coverage, weekly newsletters, photo galleries, a community calendar, and obituaries. The outlet serves both local residents and people outside the community seeking information about Breckenridge and Stephens County, including potential new residents and businesses. They chose the non-profit structure to maintain local control of news coverage while minimizing the financial burden on the community.

The organization operates under the fiscal sponsorship of the Institute for Nonprofit News (INN), which is the name that will appear on donation billing statements.
