Lady Bucks Varsity, JV volleyball teams split season opener against Poolville; Boomtown Classic tournament kicks off today
The Breckenridge High School Lady Buckaroos varsity and junior varsity volleyball teams kicked off their season with mixed results in their home opener against the Poolville High School Lady Lions on Tuesday, Aug. 13.
The varsity squad fell to the Lady Lions in four sets (14-25, 26-24, 22-25, 16-25), starting their season with a 0-1 record. The junior varsity teams fared better, with both squads securing victories. JV White won in three sets, while JV Green swept their match (25-21, 25-18).
Lane Bartoskewitz led the varsity team with nine kills; Miley Roberts had five kills, two blocks and one ace; while Joni Jackson contributed five kills, five aces, and one block. Jackson was also voted by her teammates as the FEARLESS Focus Winner.
Despite the varsity loss, new head volleyball coach Emily Gravitt remained optimistic. “Home game jitters got to us, but I never felt like we played scared or gave up,” she said in an online post. “I saw areas to improve – specifically serving and serve-receive, but I also saw great teamwork and focus. Playing at home this weekend for the Boomtown Classic Tournament is going to give us time to settle in.”
Coach Jocelyn Gonzales praised the JV White team’s performance, noting, “We had lots of aces, several attacks with kills, and high energy from everyone.”
The Lady Buckaroos are hosting the Boomtown Classic Tournament this weekend. The varsity tournament started at noon today, with bracket play continuing on Saturday, Aug. 17. The JV and freshman tournament is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 16. Click here for the brackets.
General admission tickets cost $5 each and may be purchased online through Hometown Ticketing. Additionally, the games will be livestreamed on the BISD YouTube page.
