A group of Breckenridge residents are hosting an event — Mind Matters: Break the Stigma — at 6 p.m. Saturday, May 11, with the goal of shattering the stigma surrounding mental health issues.

The event was originally planned for the courthouse lawn, but due to the forecast for rain, it’s been relocated to the First Methodist Church’s Christian Life Center,  419 W. Walker St.

Julie Carstens McNett shared with others in the community about the idea for an evening dedicated to spreading awareness, support and hope. She helped organize others in Breckenridge to present an event to “shine a light on this important cause and stand in solidarity with those who need it most,” as the flyer for the event encourages.

Mind Matters will include guest speakers, including Will Thompson and Yuri Huntington, offering stories and insights about mental health advocacy. Van Moore and Jared McLane will provide uplifting tunes that celebrate resilience and healing.

Those attending the event will have a chance to explore local mental health resources and connect with organizations and professionals offering valuable support and resources in the community.

There will be snacks and refreshments, as well as door prizes.

The evening will wrap up with a candlelight vigil in honor those affected by mental illness as a symbolic way to light up the night with hope and compassion.
