Local ag students represent Stephens County at recent contests
Last month, several Stephens County youth involved in agriculural organizations represented the community at a variety of contests, bringing home quite a few ribbons and banners.
Both the Stephens County 4-H and the Breckenridge High School FFA members participated in recent competitions.
Stephens County 4-H
Three teams of Stephens County 4-H members competed at the District 3 Food Challenge held on Wednesday, Nov. 29, in Jacksboro where over 300 4-Hers competed.
- The Cool Cooks competed in the Junior Side Dish contest and placed second.
- The Dashing Divas competed in the Junior Appetizer contest and placed fourth.
- The Weekend Warriors competed in the Intermediate Main Dish.
Earlier in November, the local 4-H organization participated in their first livestock judging contest.
The Stephens County 4-H members competed against about 240 participants at the District 3 Livestock Judging contest in Vernon on Nov. 8.
The Junior livestock judging team placed third out of 29. The team includes Evelyn Halari, Berkley White, Carder McClymond, Krawford Kennedy and Wyatt Burns. Evelyn was the seventh high individual out of 74, and Berkley was the eighth high individual out of 74.
The Senior team placed 10th out of 25. The team includes Kaylee Langford, Kadynce Kennedy, Sylee Mitchell and Kason Burchett.
The Intermediate team placed 15th out of 29. The team includes Audra Wimberley, Cantyn McClymond and Siler Morehart.
The next livestock judging contest will be the Stephens County Junior Livestock Show on Jan. 6. It will be open to all Stephens County 4-H and FFA members. Participants will have a chance to win a buckle.
Breckenridge High School FFA
Breckenridge High School’s Senior Skills Team of Jack McKay, Miley Roberts and Cabel Perkins placed fourth in the Area IV FFA Leadership Development Event (LDE) contest in Abilene on Nov. 20.
They qualified for the competition by placing second at the district contest in Weatherford on Nov. 13.
Also at the district event, several other BHS LDE teams competed, including the following:
- Greenhand Skills, third place – Gunnar Pearce, Joacim Fernandez and Bodie Skiles
- Senior Chapter Conducting, fourth place – Isabelle Biddison, Quirt Rogers, Sylee Mitchell, Alexandra Contreras, Collom Perkins, Kadynce Kennedy, Rylee Fuller, Briley Powers, Gunnar Pearce and Kayla Benitez
- Ag Advocacy, sixth place – Emily Morin, Kaitlyn Wright, Mackenzie Cloud and Morgan Duncan
- Radio, sixth place – Shyann Wickson, Joni Jackson and Mackenzie Cloud
- Greenhand Creed, sixth place – Rylee Fuller
- Greenhand Quiz – Alexandra Contreras, Braylen McCoy, Canyon Shirley and Kayla Benitez
- Senior Creed – Morgan Burns
- Senior Quiz – Kasen Ferguson, Sylee Mitchell, Kadynce Kennedy, Glen Thibodeaux, Kason Burchett, Jack McKay, Cabel Perkins and Joni Jackson

The Breckenridge Texan, a non-profit news outlet serving Breckenridge and Stephens County, Texas, has launched its annual NewsMatch fundraising campaign, running through Dec. 31, 2024.
As a non-profit news outlet, the Breckenridge Texan depends on donations, in addition to ad sales, to fund daily operations, including website costs, freelance writers, and basic office expenses. The organization aims to raise $4,000, which could be tripled to $12,000 through various matching programs, including the NewsMatch program and the Rural Partner Fund, which is supported by several major foundations.
Founded in 2017 by journalists Tony Pilkington and Carla McKeown, the Breckenridge Texan provides daily local news coverage, weekly newsletters, photo galleries, a community calendar, and obituaries. The outlet serves both local residents and people outside the community seeking information about Breckenridge and Stephens County, including potential new residents and businesses. They chose the non-profit structure to maintain local control of news coverage while minimizing the financial burden on the community.

The organization operates under the fiscal sponsorship of the Institute for Nonprofit News (INN), which is the name that will appear on donation billing statements.
