Community creates fun Halloween for Breckenridge families

On Halloween last week, the Breckenridge Chamber of Commerce, City of Breckenridge and Stephens County teamed up to offer a new activity downtown for local families.
In addition to the all-day Walker Street Trick-or-Treat that Breckenridge businesses take part in, the Family Fall Festival was held on the courthouse lawn and on the street in front of City Hall. Families had the opportunity to get candy and other treats from various businesses and organization that set up booths in front of the courthouse, as well as in vehicles on North Rose Street.
There was a photo booth, costume contest and a chance to vote on pumpkins decorated by the City of Breckenridge employees.
“It was a great success, and we cannot wait until next year to do it again!” City Secretary Jessica Sutter said in an email. “We had so much fun getting to interact with the community and the kids.”
In the pumpkin-decorating contest, Mercedes Luna won first place with her “Pennywise” pumpkin; Sutter won second place with her “Basil the Police Pumpkin,” which bore an uncanny resemblance to Breckenridge’s Police Chief Bacel Cantrell; and Diane Latham won third place with her “Bull, Cowgirl, and Rodeo Clown” pumpkins. (See pictures of the winning pumpkins below.)
Additionally, there were other Halloween- and festival-related activities throughout Breckenridge, including at East Elementary, First Methodist Church, First Baptist Church, Elliott Street Church of Christ, the Buffalo RV Park and others.
Some businesses and residents experienced a complication when a downed power line on West Walker Street led to a power outage for a couple of hours on the west side of town. Traffic was backed up for a while at West Walker and Harding Street, due to the traffic light being out. The Breckenridge Police Department, Breckenridge Fire Department and the Stephens County Sheriff’s Office helped direct traffic. Once the power was restored shortly before 7 p.m., most of the businesses reopened and the traffic cleared up.
