Woman’s Forum makes donation to Swenson Memorial Museum
The Swenson Memorial Museum, which houses much of Breckenridge and Stephens County’s history, will be getting new a copy machine, thanks to a donation by the Breckenridge Woman’s Forum. In fact, the Woman’s Forum raised so much money that the museum will be able to get two copiers, which the staff needs for day-to-day operations, as well as historical research that they and the museum’s visitors conduct.
Last week, Elizabeth Power with the Woman’s Forum visited the museum to present a check for $1,200 to Kay Meadows, director of the museum.
“Our original goal was $500, and we ended up collecting $1,200,” she said. “The Woman’s Forum is really thrilled that we could help.”
Last spring, the Woman’s Forum voted on two community service projects for the 2022-23 season. They chose the museum and the Breckenridge Library.
“We’re grateful for the donation,” said Lyn Clark, president of the Swenson Memorial Museum’s board of directors. “The museum depends on donations to operate, and we will use this for copiers. The one we have is at least 10 years old; we can’t even buy cartridges for it any more.”
The museum staff often assists researchers — in person or over the phone — with topics they are researching for family histories, historical markers and other areas of interest.
The museum received some damage from the hail storm that hit downtown Breckenridge last year, and the staff has been working to get the second floor exhibits ready to re-open.
In addition to the regular historical exhibits from Breckenridge, the museum currently has special displays on former Buckaroo and Dallas Cowboys linebacker Jerry Tubbs, the passenger trains that once stopped in Breckenridge, rural schools in Stephens County and Gold Star Mothers from the area.
The Swenson Memorial Museum is located at 116 W. Walker. The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays. Additionally, the museum will open at different hours for groups. For more information, call 254-559-8471.

As a non-profit news outlet, the Breckenridge Texan depends on donations, in addition to ad sales, to fund daily operations, including website costs, freelance writers, and basic office expenses. The organization aims to raise $4,000, which could be tripled to $12,000 through various matching programs, including the NewsMatch program and the Rural Partner Fund, which is supported by several major foundations.
