The Breckenridge Texan is once again participating in the international fundraising campaign NewsMatch, which will double the amount of donations that we receive through Dec. 31. Additionally, the Breckenridge Texan has been selected to receive an additional match from an anonymous foundation as part of NewsMatch 2022.

The foundation is supporting newsrooms upholding democracy through their coverage of elections, voting rights, and local and statewide government, according to the information we received. As you may know, the Breckenridge Texan regularly covers local and statewide elections with articles explaining how to register to vote, who is running for office, as well as the results of all local elections, in addition to our everyday news coverage.

To qualify for the additional match, we need to raise at least $4,000. If the Breckenridge Texan can raise at least $4,000 in donations through Dec. 31, 2022, the first $4,000 we raise will be tripled. We’ve already received several contributions and hope you’ll help us reach our goal by making a donation.

“The Breckenridge Texan is honored to be a part of NewsMatch again and excited to be included in the additional match program,” said Breckenridge Texan co-founder and publisher Tony Pilkington. “If we can get enough donations, we can turn $4,000 into $12,000, and that will go a long way on our budget.”

This is our fifth year to take part in the NewsMatch project, which supports non-profit newsrooms, including the Breckenridge Texan. All donations — and the matching funds — will go to the Breckenridge Texan and help support our work here to provide quality news to the local community.

There are several ways to make a donation:

As a non-profit news site, the Breckenridge Texan depends on donations, in addition to ad sales, to fund our daily operations.

“The Breckenridge Texan depends on the support of this community; without that support, we wouldn’t be able to continue to provide Breckenridge with as much news as we can,” Pilkington said. “We do our best to keep Breckenridge and Stephens County as informed as possible about what’s happening, and we depend on our readers to keep us going.”

Each year since the Breckenridge Texan was launched in the Fall of 2017, reader contributions have grown, he said.

“We appreciate every dollar that we receive,” Pilkington said. “We also appreciate all of other types of assistance we get from the community, such as advertising, news tips, stories and photos sent in by local organizations, our newsletter readership, word-of-mouth support.”

In addition to regular news coverage, the Breckenridge Texan also offers:
