The Turkey Trot race kicked off the Thanksgiving holiday at Breckenridge’s South Elementary School on Friday afternoon, the last day of school before the holiday break.

South Elementary students, teachers, parents and others faced Friday’s chilly weather for the annual run through the neighborhood around the school. Many were bundled up in jackets, hats and even blankets to stay warm.

Breckenridge Police Chief Bacel Cantrell and other emergency responders helped block off the runners’ route, which was about a mile long.

The event was started by South Elementary PE teacher Tamara Russell several years ago when she was working at North Elementary. When Breckenridge Independent School District reorganized the schools a couple of years ago, the tradition moved to South Elementary, along with Russell.

Several of those involved with the race, including South Principal Joshua Holt, dressed up in turkey costumes. The first 30 students to finish the race were awarded Turkey Trot t-shirts.

Breckenridge schools will be out for the Thanksgiving holiday this coming week. Classes will resume on Monday, Nov. 28.
