The new Lady Bucks softball coach, Cyndi Herrera, comes to Breckenridge after two trips in a row to the state tournament with the Stamford High School Lady Bulldogs.

In 2021, Herrera’s Stamford team won the state championship and she was named the 2A Softball Coach of the Year by the Texas Sports Writers Association, Big Country Preps and Region 1 District 7. She was also the Texas Girls Coaching Association’s All-Star Coach in 2021.

This past spring, the Lady Bulldogs made it to the state semifinals before losing to the Lovelady Lady Lions.

Breckenridge Independent School District Athletic Director Casey Pearce recommended Herrera to the Board of Trustees at their regular meeting on Monday, June 13, and they unanimously approved.

“We’ve got a great opportunity tonight to introduce a new softball coach,” Pearce said during the meeting. “She took over a program at Stamford that was competitive, and she took them to a different level in the last three seasons. And we’ve got an opportunity to steal her and bring her here. She’s an Abilene High graduate. She’s a McMurry War Hawk. We had the opportunity to go out and get her, and she was obliging whenever we made the offer. She had many offers that she could pick from. She chose to stay in the Abilene area, around the family, and she chose Breckenridge, to come and be a part of the Lady Bucks. So, we’re excited that she’s here.”

After the meeting, Herrera said that she was impressed with the Lady Bucks when Stamford played them in the Brock tournament earlier this spring. “The community’s very supportive, and the parents are,” she said. “And, most of all, I see the potential, and I’m ready to take them to the next level. I mean, not overnight, obviously, but I’m excited. There’s definitely potential there.”

Herrera said she is eager to get to work in Breckenridge, emphasizing her philosophy of dedication. “If you want to get to Austin, if you want to be able to compete, it starts in the offseason,” she said.

The Lady Bucks will be in a different district, Class 3A’s District 8, for the 2022-23 school year. Their district opponents will be Brock, Comanche, Dublin, Early, Eastland, Millsap and Peaster.
