Buckaroos to compete at State track meet on Thursday; send-off planned for Wednesday morning
Five Breckenridge Buckaroos will compete at the UIL’s 2022 Track and Field State Meet on Thursday in Austin.
Breckenridge High School Senior Daniel Valdez; juniors Chase Lehr, Sean Cooksey, Adrian Ruiz and Anson Rodgers; and freshman Sawyer Wimberley will travel to Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin for Thursday’s events. BISD Athletic Director Casey Pearce said there will be a send-off for the Buckaroos at 11:20 a.m. Wednesday, May 11, in front of the high school.
Lehr will run in the 800-meter race at 5:20 p.m.; Cooksey will compete in the 100-meter at 6:05 p.m.; the 4×200 relay team of Ruiz, Valdez, Cooksey and Wimberley will run at 6:25 p.m.; and Ruiz will run in the 200-meter dash at 7:30 p.m. Rodgers and Lehr are alternates for the relay team.
The Buckaroos, who are coached by Mark Young, qualified for the State meet by placing in the top two in the Regional Track Meet at Abilene Christian University last month. The Breckenridge boys finished in second place overall with 55 points.
In the 800-meter, Lehr won the gold (1:54.45), and Caleb Cameron placed seventh. In the 4×200 relay, Ruiz, Valdez, Wimberley and Cooksey came in first place with a time of 1:28.52. In the 100-meter, Cooksey placed second with a time of 10.5. In the 200-meter, Ruiz placed second with a time of 22.01. In the 1,600-meter, Lehr came in third with a time of 4:31.52, and Cameron placed 16th. In the 4×100 relay, Wimberley, Cooksey, Rodgers and Adrian Ruiz placed seventh. In the shot put, Harley Davis placed seventh; in the discus, Davis placed fifth and Isaak Eutimio placed 11th; and, in the pole vault, Jaxon Escalon placed sixth.
Earlier in April, the boys track team placed second overall in the Area track meet, which was held in Breckenridge, and they won first place overall at the District meet, which was held at City View High School in Wichita Falls.
