March 30

  • A deputy transported a Stephens County Jail inmate to a Texas Department of Criminal Justice prison unit near Abilene.

April 2

  • A deputy served an arrest warrant on a 33-year-old male who was already in the Stephens County Jail. The warrant was for violating bond/protective order.

April 4

  • A deputy was dispatched to an address on West Third Street due to the possible recovery of stolen items from a burglary in the county from September 2019. Stolen items were located and recovered, and other possible stolen items were seized for safekeeping. Suspects have been identified. This investigation is on-going.

April 5

  • A deputy contacted a female and her vehicle in the 500 block of West Walker Street. Marijuana was seized, and a warrant will be obtained for her arrest after the pandemic subsides.

April 6

  • A deputy was dispatched to a home on CR 202 for a burglary of a habitation report. Shortly after the initial report was taken, it was learned that the stolen property was located at an address in the 1700 block of FM 3201. Two deputies went to this location where much of stolen property was recovered, and a 25-year-old female was arrested for the burglary. Other suspects were identified, and the case is on-going.

April 8

  • Two members of the Sheriff’s Office transported to two male inmates of Stephens County Jail to Young County Jail.

April 9

  • A deputy initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle near West Walker Street and South Breckenridge Avenue. The vehicle evaded for a short distanced then stopped. The driver was identified, and marijuana was found in the vehicle. The driver was released and warrants of arrest will be sought after the pandemic.
  • The Sheriff’s Office recovered more stolen property from the April 6 burglary during two different traffic stops.

April 10

  • The Sheriff’s Office obtained a second warrant for burglary of a habitation on another female from the crime on April 6. It was served on a 26-year-old female on FM 3201 during a traffic stop.

April 16

  • A deputy was dispatched to a disturbance on CR 261. A female involved would not leave private property and was arrested for Criminal Trespass.

April 17

  • A female inmate was released on bond, and the Sheriff’s Office transported her to a behavioral hospital in Abilene.
  • A deputy initiated a traffic stop on West Walker Street. A drug investigation ensued. A methamphetamine pipe and marijuana were seized. The 23-year-old male driver was arrested for these offenses and Driving While License Invalid.

April 18

  • A deputy conducted a traffic stop, where the 33-year-old male driver was arrested for a Driving While License Invalid warrant.

The Sheriff’s Office has spent many resources over the last several weeks handling the spread of COVID-19. These concern the jail, the Law Enforcement Center, staff, and the community.

Calls for service include but are not limited to: 911 calls, non-emergency calls, registering sex offenders, traffic accidents/hazards, transporting prisoners and juveniles in and out of the county, mental hospital transports, court security, and some types of proactive calls.

As a non-profit news outlet, the Breckenridge Texan depends on donations, in addition to ad sales, to fund daily operations, including website costs, freelance writers, and basic office expenses. The organization aims to raise $4,000, which could be tripled to $12,000 through various matching programs, including the NewsMatch program and the Rural Partner Fund, which is supported by several major foundations.

Founded in 2017 by journalists Tony Pilkington and Carla McKeown, the Breckenridge Texan provides daily local news coverage, weekly newsletters, photo galleries, a community calendar, and obituaries. The outlet serves both local residents and people outside the community seeking information about Breckenridge and Stephens County, including potential new residents and businesses. They chose the non-profit structure to maintain local control of news coverage while minimizing the financial burden on the community.
