Letter: Marquis Martin Scholarship Fund
To Whom It May Concern,
We are seeking donations for a memorial scholarship in honor of our dear friend, Marquis Lafayette Martin III, a Breckenridge High School graduate of the Class of 2002 and proud lifelong Buckaroo.
We tragically lost Marquis to a sudden illness in 2016, and we are committed to honoring him in a way that would make him proud – by helping other future BHS graduates pursue their dreams. Marquis was a light that shone brightly in many corners of BISD. He was an active student and athlete, participating in a wide variety of activities and organizations throughout his years in Breckenridge. He was the epitome of a “team player,” and he was incredibly dependable. He had a way of making an impression on people – he made people feel valued and important. From theatre to band to athletics to church youth activities, Marquis made friends everywhere he went. His caring nature and genuinely good spirit made an impact, and he was an asset to any situation where he was needed.
After high school, Marquis went on to graduate from the University of Texas in Austin and shortly after became a husband and father. True to form, Marquis excelled in these endeavors, as well. His short life was one well-lived, and we miss him so much.
The Marquis Martin Memorial Scholarship is our way of keeping his spirit alive in Breckenridge. It is our hope that we can share Marquis’s generosity and positivity with a new generation of Buckaroos. We have started this scholarship to be given to a graduating senior of Breckenridge High School who exhibits many of the qualities that made Marquis unique. The recipients of this scholarship must be well-respected leaders among their classmates. To be considered for the Marquis Martin Memorial Scholarship, a student should be active in a wide variety of activities. Most importantly, though, this scholarship must go to a person who is kind and caring. The scholarship committee is dedicated to selecting these students based on their applications, references, essays and interviews.
Marquis may not be with us anymore, but his memory will live on in all who knew him. By giving money to deserving high school seniors, his legacy will continue and grow for many years to come. But that is where we need your help. We humbly ask that you donate to this scholarship to ensure that Marquis’s impact will spread to as many students as possible. All funds will be used exclusively for scholarship funds. Please make your check payable to the Breckenridge Education Foundation and mail to the address:
#2 London Circle
Breckenridge, TX 76424
We thank you for your support and hope that you can help us benefit deserving students as they leave Breckenridge High School and pursue further education.
Respectfully,
Marquis Martin Memorial Scholarship Committee
