Theater camp to present ‘Gulliver’s Travels’ today
The local children participating in the Missoula Children’s Theatre summer camp this week will perform “Gulliver’s Travels” on Saturday, July 21, at the National Theatre, 116 E. Walker St.
There will be two performances, one at 3 p.m. and one at 5:30 p.m. Tickets to the event will cost $5 each. The event will be open to the public.
The summer theater camp is hosted by the Friends of Historic Breckenridge and the National Theatre. The Missoula Children’s Theatre is based in Missoula, Montana, and presents the camps around the country each summer.
The presentation today is an adaptation of “Gulliver’s Travels” with a sci-fi twist — Gulliver is traveling through space in this version of the story. It includes Gulliver and trusty computer JCN, which seems to be always on the fritz. An “Invisible Force” guides Gulliver from world to world, but they are under the control of the “Maniacal Scientist of Lapunta.” There are space aliens, robots and more.
The mission of the Missoula Children’s Theatre is: The development of life skills in children through participation in the performing arts. According to information from MCT, the theater program has been operating for 45 years and this year will work with 65,000 children in more than 1,200 communities in all 50 states and 17 countries.
The National Theatre, located in downtown Breckenridge, is a 1920s-era movie theater that has been restored by the local nonprofit organization Friends of Historic Breckenridge. The organization uses the theater to present a variety of programs to the community, from movies to concerts. It also is available for rent for private events.
