With today’s temperatures remaining below freezing and many streets still iced over, the winter storm that moved into the area on Friday, continues to have an impact on Breckenridge and Stephens County.

The offices of the City of Breckenridge, Stephens County and Breckenridge Independent School District will be closed on Monday, Jan. 26, and all local school classes have been canceled for Monday, due to road conditions caused by the winter storm that entered the area on Friday, Jan. 23.
The first big winter storm of the season, especially for this area, is forecast for this weekend, prompting preparations from people in a wide swath of the country, from the Southern Plains to New England. Breckenridge and Stephens County are under a Winter Storm Warning and an Extreme Cold Watch with the low temperature predicted to get as low as 2 degrees overnight Sunday-Monday.
Thanks to two local ranches, Stephens County has donated the 10th most amount of money to the Alamo Statewide Stampede, a public fundraising challenge among the 254 counties in the State of Texas to see which county can raise the most funds.
A wildfire that broke out Saturday in southeast Stephens County near the Eastland County line burned 16 acres before being contained.
The Texas Indigent Defense Commission approved more than $21 million in grant funding, with substantial investments directed toward strengthening public defender programs in rural communities, including Stephens County.
Filing for county offices on the March 2026 Democratic and Republican primary election is underway and will continue through Dec. 8.
Stephens County residents who receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits will have another opportunity to get help this weekend as the community continues to assist families affected by the federal government shutdown.
Community leaders gathered at the Stephens County Courthouse this afternoon to discuss emergency plans for helping local residents who will not be getting their SNAP benefits (aka “food stamps”) this month, due to the federal government shutdown.
Malcolm Bufkin was named the Stephens County Fire Marshal at the County Commissioner meeting this morning, Monday, June 23. He was sworn in this afternoon.
