Breckenridge Buckaroos, Dublin Lions scrimmage to raise funds for benevolence fund
The Breckenridge High School Buckaroos and the Dublin High School Lions will take the field at Buckaroo Stadium on Friday, Aug. 14, for a pre-season scrimmage designated as part of the statewide “Our Day to Shine” program.
The JV scrimmage will start at 5:30 p.m., and the varsity scrimmage will start at 7 p.m.; the public is invited to attend.
While the scrimmage gives both teams a chance to prepare for the regular season, all proceeds from funds raised (less expenses) will be donated directly to the Texas High School Coaches Education Foundation (THSCEF) Benevolence Fund.
The Benevolence Fund was created by the Texas High School Coaches Association (THSCA) Board of Directors in 2004 to support student-athletes and coaches who are experiencing extreme hardship, extending support beyond standard permanent injury and memorial benefit policies.
To date, the “Our Day to Shine” program has achieved significant reach across Texas high school athletics:
- Over 1,441 schools have participated by hosting an ODTS scrimmage or spring game.
- Coaches and communities have raised over $1,000,000 for the THSCEF Benevolence Fund.
- The fund has distributed over $820,000 in aid to help athletes and coaches facing severe hardships.
Participating schools will be recognized in the October issue of Texas Coach magazine.
The organizing force behind the initiative, the Texas High School Coaches Association (THSCA), has grown into the largest coaches association in America, boasting over 27,000 members.
Formally organized in 1930, with 28 members as the Texas High School Football Coaches Association, the organization dropped “football” from its title in 1941 to open membership to all secondary school coaches. Its mission remains straightforward: “To help and serve our Texas high school coaches as they work to help and serve our student athletes — helping coaches to help kids.”
