The 2026 Stephens County Junior Livestock Show wrapped up Saturday morning with the cattle show, Jacob Jackson Master Showman competition and the buckle presentation, followed by the annual livestock sale.

This year’s show included 101 young exhibitors showing animals in 71 classes. The show started on Thursday evening with the Rabbit Division. On Friday, the contests included Poultry, Goats, Sheep, Swine and the livestock judging competition. Friday’s events also included the Pee Wee Show and the judging ag projects and art show. On Saturday morning, the interviews for the Herdsman Awards were held, followed by the cattle contest, the showman competition and the awards presentation. The General Show Chairman for the 68th annual SCJLS was Nick Reynolds.

Sylee Mitchell was chosen as the Jacob Jackson Master Showman on Saturday morning, competing against five others for the annual award.

The showman contest focuses on the skills the students exhibit as they show their animals throughout the livestock show. Each year, the final competition includes the senior showmanship winners from the SCJLS divisions of poultry, rabbit, sheep, goat, swine and cattle.

At the end of each division’s competition throughout the SCJLS, the exhibitors may participate in the showmanship contest. The winners from each division then compete for the master showman award. In final contest, each exhibitor shows a chicken, rabbit, sheep, goat, swine and steer/heifer, regardless of which category they originally won in. The contestants often borrow the other animals from their friends and fellow exhibitors and seek out advice on showing the animals they are not accustomed to showing. The winner receives a framed belt buckle and $1,000.

The award is named after the late Jacob Jackson, who died in 2014 at the age of 33. He had been active in the SCJLS for years.

Winning the Showman awards in each category were:

  • Collom Perkins — Rabbit Division Senior Showmanship winner
  • Kole Wright — Poultry Division Senior Showmanship winner
  • Sylee Mitchell — Goat Division Senior Showmanship winner
  • Brenna Groene — Sheep Division Senior Showmanship winner
  • Adison Kinder — Swine Division Senior Showmanship winner
  • Isabelle Biddison — Cattle Division Senior Showmanship winner

Sylee was presented with the award by Addalyn Jackson, Jacob’s daughter, and Tye Jackson, his brother.

This year’s Jacob Jackson Master Showman contest was judged by Ingrid Tusa of Stamford, who was joined by her daughter, Georgia.

Not only are the competitors judged on their abilities to show the animals, but the judge also talks to each one individually, asking them questions about the animals and other related topics. For example, Tusa said, she asked them why they thought they should be the Master Showman and, if not themselves, who else they thought should win.

“That was interesting, and they all handled that extremely well, because that’s a lot to talk about,” she said. “…They all came through it just wonderfully. I was really proud of you all for that, and it was also fun to see who they thought, ‘If not me, who should be the winner?'”

Another point Tusa made was that all of the contestants talked about work ethic.

“We’ve always tried to teach our children, you never know who’s watching; you always should try to do the best job you can, work hard, do what’s right, because at the end of the day, that’s that’s what life is about, being a good person, being a good human being, helping others and working hard,” she said. “And so, … that was neat to hear them talk about.”

In addition to the Senior Showmanship winners competing for the Jacob Jackson award, younger exhibitors compete for the junior showman award in each of the livestock divisions.
