It may have been a couple of weeks late, but the annual Turkey Trot at Breckenridge’s South Elementary was as full of energy as always when about 300 students, along with some school staff members, parents and others, raced along a mile-long route through the neighborhood near the school this morning, Dec. 5.

Bad weather on the Thursday before Thanksgiving caused the event to be rescheduled for today. But, the delay did not dampen the enthusiasm of the participants. Several of those involved with the race dressed up in turkey costumes, in the spirit of the race’s theme.

The event was started by former BISD teacher Tamara Russell in 2015 when she was working at North Elementary. When Breckenridge Independent School District reorganized the schools a few years ago, the tradition moved to South Elementary.

The first 30 students to finish the race were awarded Turkey Trot t-shirts.

Holiday events for local kids continue this weekend with Breakfast with Santa at East Elementary from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 6; the pancake breakfast is free and open to the public. On Sunday, Dec. 7, the Stephens County Humane Society will offer Pet Photos with Santa at Tractor Supply from 2 to 4 p.m. as a fundraiser for the organization; digital photos will cost $20 each.
