Filing for county offices on the March 2026 Democratic and Republican primary election is underway and will continue through Dec. 8. According to the county clerk’s office on Wednesday, Nov. 26, two of the local races will be contested — the constable position has two candidates so far, and there is one Republican candidate and one independent candidate for the county judge’s office.

Locally, the offices of County Judge, County Clerk, County Treasurer, Justice of the Peace, Constable, County Commissioner-Precinct 2, County Commissioner-Precinct 4, District Clerk and Republican and Democratic Chairs.

Candidates seeking the nomination of the Democratic or Republican Party for a county office must file a candidate application with the county chair for the specific party. In Stephens County, the Republican Party Chair is Scott Harris and the Democratic Party Chair is Tom Thompson. Additionally, candidates must pay a filing fee or present a petition in lieu of filing fee to the county clerk.

Filing is also open to run for the offices of Governor, Lt. Gov., Attorney General, U.S. Senator, U.S. Representative, State Representative, and several other state and U.S. offices.

So far, every local candidate who has submitted paperwork is running as a Republican, except for Melisa Baker, who is pursuing an independent bid for county judge.

The following list of candidates had filed their paperwork with the County Clerk’s office by Wednesday, Nov. 26:

County Judge

Will Thompson has filed as a Republican candidate for county judge. Melisa Baker has filed her campaign treasurer paperwork with the county, appointing Rhonda Hisey of Weatherford as her campaign treasurer, and has submitted a declaration of intent to run as an independent. Because independent candidates do not participate in the primary, she will file with the state later in the year and will not appear on the primary ballot. Current County Judge Michael Roach announced earlier this year that he does not intend to run for re-election.

County Clerk

County Clerk Jackie Ensey is running for re-election.

County Treasurer

Chelsea Cornwell has filed to run for re-election as county treasurer and has completed all required paperwork.

Justice of the Peace

Steve Spoon is seeking another term as justice of the Peace.

Constable

Two candidates are running for constable: Justin Shockley and current Constable Brian McBride.

County Commissioners

County Commissioners Mark McCullough, Precinct 2, and Tanner Wade, Precinct 4, are running for re-election.

District Clerk

District Clerk Stephanie Elder is running for re-election.

County Republican Chair

County Republican Chair Scott Harris has filed for re-election. The Democratic chair, Tom Thompson, had not submitted any filing paperwork, as of Nov. 26.
