The Breckenridge Buckaroos continued their District 3-3A campaign Friday evening, Oct. 17, by hosting the Jim Ned Indians and hoping to rebound from their District 3-3A opening loss (22-14) to the Clyde Bulldogs; however it was the Indians that came out with the win, 49-7.

The Bucks now turn their attention to the Comanche Indians, who were defeated by the Sweetwater Mustangs 55-14 on Friday.

Comanche enters the game 3-4 overall and 0-2 in district, while the Bucks are 2-5 overall and 0-2 in district.

“All I can tell you is the next three weeks are do or die,” Buckaroo head coach Casey Pearce said after Friday night’s game. “We win two in this three-game stretch, we get in (the playoffs). We don’t and we are done. So, that’s how you are going to have to play, like you’re backed into a dang corner. We got to scrap and claw and find a way.”

In Friday’s game against Jim Ned, Pearce said there were some bright spots, but it was turnovers and explosive plays that played a pivotal role.

“We did some things right throughout the course of the ball game, but we gave up some explosive plays and turned the ball over,” Pearce said. “You can’t do that against the number three team in the state of Texas. Mark my words, they are going to make a run and people are going to be shocked with how we played with them because we played well at times and not good enough at others.”

The Indians started Friday’s game with a quick five-play 75-yard drive that ended with a 30-yard touchdown pass from Cash Gwinn to Garon Beasley. The PAT was good, giving Jim Ned a 7-0 lead with 9:16 remaining in the first quarter.

The Buckaroos put together a 10-play drive that stretched 39 yards, but the drive ended with a failed fourth down attempt.

Jim Ned answered with a six-play 74-yard drive that was capped off with a 46-yard touchdown run by Aiden Ellis. The PAT was good, making the score 14-0 with 48 seconds left in the first quarter.

Breckenridge was forced to punt on their next drive, and two plays later Jim Ned scored again with a 32-yard touchdown pass from Gwinn to Beasley. The PAT was good, giving the Indians a 21-0 lead with 7:35 left in the second quarter.

The Buckaroos were able to answer on the ensuing kickoff as Truett Trammel found some running room and returned the kickoff 89 yards to the endzone. The PAT by Josiah Acosta was good, making the score 21-7 with 7:20 remaining in the second quarter.

The Indians answered with a nine-play 68-yard drive that ended with a 36-yard touchdown run by Gwinn. The PAT was no good, making the score 27-7.

The Bucks were forced to punt on their next possession, and the Indians were able to find the endzone once again with an eight-play 45-yard drive that ended with a one-yard touchdown run by Ellis. Ellis ran in for the two-point conversion to give the Indians a 35-7 lead with 32 seconds remaining in the first half.

Jim Ned scored once again on the last play of the first half as the Buckaroo quarterback was hit as he was attempting to pass the football, leading to a fumble recovery by Mason Miller, who returned it 40 yards for a touchdown. The Bucks trailed 42-7 at halftime.

In the second half, the Buckaroos put together a 10-play 28-yard drive that went to the Jim Ned 25-yard line, but an interception by Cason Cumby ended the Bucks’ drive.

The Indians went 77 yards in eight plays and capped off the ensuing drive with a one-yard pass from Gwinn to Breck Lawson. The PAT was good, giving the Indians a 49-7 lead with 2:30 remaining in the third quarter.

That would be the final points of the game as the Bucks failed to convert two fourth down attempts in the fourth quarter and the Buckaroo defense forced two punts by Jim Ned.

Pearce noted the importance of being able to move forward after the loss and improve as the district games progress.

“It’s just like that loss last week. It’s not any different. You got to be able to flush it and move forward,” Pearce said. “If it doesn’t hurt and bother you, then you’re probably not a very good football team. We are a real good football team that has to be able to flush it and move forward.

“We did some things well tonight and we allowed some stuff to happen,” he continued. “That’s the first time our secondary has been attacked like that.”
