Despite having the lead in the third quarter Friday night, Oct. 10, the Buckaroos varsity football team lost their district opener to the Clyde Bulldogs in Clyde, 22-14.

The Bulldogs scored first on a touchdown pass near the end of the first quarter. With the extra point kick good, the score was 7-0 in favor of Clyde with 1:45 left in the first quarter.

Late in the second quarter, the Buckaroos tied up the score. On a 4th-and-8, the Buckaroos got a first down when Joseph Juneau completed a pass to Ryan Waller on the 14 yard line. On the next play, Jaime Cruz ran up the middle for the touchdown. Josiah Acosta kicked the extra point with 1:41 left in the first half.

The Buckaroos pulled ahead in the third quarter following another long pass from Juneau to Waller and a pass from Juneau to Cam David resulting in a touchdown. Another Acosta kick put the score at 14-7 in favor of Breckenridge with 3:03 left in the third quarter.

Clyde’s next possession took the game into the fourth quarter, and the Bulldogs scored a touchdown followed by a two-point conversion. With 11:16 left in the game, Clyde regained the lead, 15-14.

The final score of the night came about five minutes later when the Bulldogs scored again. With the extra point, the score was 22-14.

After the game, Breckenridge Head Coach Casey Pearce said it was a “disappointing loss. We had opportunities to do some things with it, and we didn’t capitalize. Couldn’t make a play in space there late, couldn’t finish the drive there in the fourth quarter. It’s frustrating from both ends, offensively and defensively. All we can do is get ready for the next one.”

Pearce said the team is better than in recent years but that there’s still work to do. “There’s no doubt they’re a better football team than we’ve been the last two years, but still, nobody feels sorry for you, and you got to make plays whenever it matters…,” he said. “Better figure it out here in the next four weeks. You got to win. We got to win one on the road, again, somehow. We got one at the house that’s gonna be rough. It’s gonna be tough against Jim Ned. That’s all I’m gonna say about those dudes; they’re a good football team.”

Joseph Juneau completed 11 of 24 passing attempts for 133 yards. Ryan Waller was the leading receiver with seven catches for 81 yards.

Christian Flores was the leading rusher for the Buckaroos with 33 yards on 9 carries, and Cruz had 32 yards on 7 carries and one touchdown.

Defensively, Flores was the leading tackler for the Buckaroo defense with 14 total tackles (five for loss), four solo and 10 assists. Hudson Woodward, Glen Thibodeaux and Hunter Davis each had nine tackles.

Next week, Breckenridge will play the Jim Ned Indians in Buckaroo Stadium. Last Friday, Jim Ned beat Comanche High School 56-3 at home.
