With two weeks of practice behind them and two more weeks to go until the first regular game of the 2025 season, the Breckenridge High School varsity football team – along with the volleyball, cross country and cheer teams, the band, the livestream and stadium media teams, and the game operators – will host Meet the Bucks at 8 p.m. tonight, Friday, Aug. 15, in Buckaroo Stadium.

Prior to the event, the coaches and the athletes and their families will meet in the main gym for family pictures.

At last week’s Watermelon Scrimmage, BHS Head Football Coach Casey Pearce said he liked the energy and physicality his players showed during the annual intrasquad scrimmage.

“It’s the energy. Kids ran around. They were excited to bang around on each other, and that’s what it’s about now,” Pearce said. “Now let’s start getting worried about an opponent. Let’s get ready to hit somebody that’s not gonna go to class with us.”

Pearce said the scrimmage gave all players a chance to get on the field. “Everybody was here. Everybody got reps, fairly positive. In the huddles, there was some frustration, but that’s part of this game, you know, how can you work through frustration?” he said.

The coach noted some execution issues with the junior varsity squad. “It gets frustrating when the JV kids can’t snap the ball or take a snap,” he said. “That just kills play for 10 other guys… Becoming a high school football player, you have to learn how to do early on. That’s why they’re not going to play on Friday night. They’ve got to learn, and we’ve got to give them that opportunity.”

Pearce said after the Watermelon Scrimmage that there were no surprises for the coaching staff.

“…there may have been some surprises for some fans, but no surprises for me,” he said. “We’re where we need to be this week, and we got to continue to take steps. The finished product should be week 11, when we play that last one. But what can we do between now and game one to get ready to compete and be fighters…that’s what I’m looking for. Who’s going to compete whenever they get tired and hurt … and have had their mouth bloodied and they come back and fight back and continue to play.”

Pearce said that as far as the Buckaroos’ offensive strategy is concerned, he is focused on the ground game. “I’ve kind of made my mind up, I want us to be able to run the football. I think that’s how you control the clock, and I think that’s how you develop a mentality,” he said. “I don’t know that a year ago, we had much mentality of anything, whether it’s throwing the ball, running the ball…we had no identity as a football team. We need to create some identity, and that’s competitors, fighters, physical guys that like to get their nose bloodied and play. That’s what this place is about.”

On Thursday, Aug. 14, the Buckaroos traveled to Fort Worth for the Breckenridge/Castleberry/Gainesville scrimmage, and on Thursday, Aug. 21, they will go to Wall to scrimmage against the Wall High School Hawks.

The first game of the season will be in Buckaroo Stadium on Friday, Aug. 29, against the Holliday High School Eagles.

Homecoming is schedule for Sept. 19 against the Eastland Mavericks. The annual Homecoming Parade is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. on Sept. 17 in downtown Breckenridge. This year’s parade theme is “Boots and Roots.” According to the organizers, “This year’s theme celebrates everything that makes us proud to be Breckenridge! From our sidelines to the stage, from our first traditions to our memories we’re making now – we’re pulling on our boots and honoring the roots that run deep in Breckenridge!”
