Texas history and art on exhibit at Breckenridge Fine Arts Center

Texas history, artwork and artists are the focus of two exhibits on display now at the Breckenridge Fine Arts Center.

In the main gallery, the Daughters of the Republic of Texas – Picketville Chapter – have set up displays around the theme “Remembering the Republic of Texas.” The exhibit includes a variety of household utensils and farming/ranching tools, including pots and pans, hatchets, clothing, butter churns, clothing, pocket watches and much more.

There are also quilts, embroidered items and toys. The display also includes the “six flags of Texas,” as well as other flags that have been important throughout Texas’ history.

Another aspect to the exhibit large, informational posters provided by the DRT headquarters in Austin. They cover topics such as a map drawn by Stephen F. Austin, Tejano heroes, the San Jacinto Monument, the Alamo, and more.

The BFAC’s smaller gallery features artwork that features Texas scenes, as well as art by Texas artists. The exhibit is on loan from Charles Morin, who owns galleries in Fredericksburg and San Antonio.

It features about 60 items, including paintings, sculptures and vintage Texas utilitarian pottery. According to an email from Morin, “There is a good a mixture of Vintage and Contemporary Texas art (including) Porfirio Salinas, Jose Arpa, G. Harvey, Jose Vives-Atsara, Robert Harrison, Eric Harrison, Cliff Cavin, Melvin Warren, Lester Hughes, Hugo Pohl, W.A. Slaughter, Joe Rader Roberts, Bob Moline, Edward Reichert, Buck Schiwetz, Jerry Ruthven, John Bennett, Fred Darge, A.D. Greer and more.  Also, Leopard, Hogue, I. Suttles and other early Texas utilitarian pottery.”

There is also an Edward Bohlin saddle on display.

Morin is scheduled to visit Breckenridge and give a talk on vintage and contemporary Texas art and vintage Texas utilitarian pottery. A date for the talk hasn’t been confirmed yet, but it will likely be in March, according to BFAC Director Rhonda Crawford.

The exhibits are scheduled to be on display through March 15.

The BFAC, located at 207 N. Breckenridge Ave., is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays.
