City of Breckenridge to host Citizens Academy next year, offering behind-the-scenes look at local government

Local community members will have a chance to see what goes on behind the scenes in local government when the City of Breckenridge hosts a Citizens Academy, beginning Jan. 13.

The Citizens Academy will be a free nine-month course held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on the second Monday of each month through September. It will provide a comprehensive and in-depth look at how the City of Breckenridge operates.

The registration deadline is Dec. 20, and the program will be limited to 25 participants.

The course will cover the following schedule:

  • Jan. 13: Administration/Finance
  • Feb. 10: City Secretary/Municipal Court
  • March 10: Public Works
  • April 14: Police/Animal Control
  • May 12: Fire/Public Services
  • June 9: Development Services/Breckenridge Economic Development Corporation/Breckenridge Downtown Development Council
  • July 14: Breckenridge Chamber of Commerce/Breckenridge Independent School District
  • Aug. 11: Stephens County/Stephens Memorial Hospital/Sacred Cross (ambulance service)
  • Sept. 8: Partnerships and Collaboration/Graduation

Participants will visit various city facilities and build relationships in an interactive environment. Upon graduating, participants will be able to be more engaged and energized to lead in the community and effectively work with local government officials to attain community goals.

The City of Breckenridge staff members would like to see applications for the program from individuals who want to learn about the operations of the City of Breckenridge, about other community partners and how they work together, and about how to get involved and be a part of the solution.

The program is open to residents of Breckenridge, owners of businesses located in Breckenridge, anyone who is at least a senior in high school at BISD, or students enrolled at Texas State Technical College.

A recognition of completion ceremony will be held at the City Commission meeting scheduled for Oct. 7, at 5:30 p.m.

To register, fill in the application form and submit it online; print a PDF version of the application and return it via email to Lacy Botts at lbotts@breckenridgetx.gov or via U.S. mail; or pick up a printed applications at City Hall, located at 105 N. Rose Ave. in downtown Breckenridge.
