The Breckenridge community is coming together to raise funds to help a family who lost their home to a fire last week.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to benefit Felipe and Maria Palacios and their family, who lived in the house in the 200 block of East First Street. Click here to make a donation.

According to the Breckenridge Fire Department, the fire was reported shortly before 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 29. Fire crews arrived on scene to begin working the fire, but with the strong wind conditions that day, the fire quickly escalated, the BFD reported on Facebook. The cause of the fire was undetermined at the time and was a complete loss. Hubbard Creek Volunteer Fire Department, Breckenridge Police Department, Stephens County Sheriff’s Office and Sacred Cross EMS assisted at the scene.

No one was home at the time of the fire, but the family lost not only their home but also some vehicles, according to other online reports.

In addition to the GoFundMe page, there also will be a Burger Basket Fundraiser to help raise funds for anything the family may need. The cheeseburger basket will include a burger (with veggies included on the side), fries, drink and a dessert for $15. Ketchup, mustard, and mayo will be available to self-serve during pickup.

Burgers must be pre-ordered by contacting Melissa Palacios or Adriana’s Taqueria on Facebook. Orders will be available for pickup from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 6, at Adriana’s Taqueria, 126 S. Court St. Payment may be made in cash at pickup or via Cash App ($melissa14palacios) or Venmo (@Melissapalc). All funds raised will be donated to the Palacios family; the fundraiser organizers said that any extra donations will be appreciated.

A third fundraiser for the Palacios family will be held on Sunday, Nov. 10, at 4 p.m. at the trade barn in the Breckenridge City Park. There will be different stands of food, drinks, desserts and activities, according to the post on the Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church’s Facebook page.

As a non-profit news outlet, the Breckenridge Texan depends on donations, in addition to ad sales, to fund daily operations, including website costs, freelance writers, and basic office expenses. The organization aims to raise $4,000, which could be tripled to $12,000 through various matching programs, including the NewsMatch program and the Rural Partner Fund, which is supported by several major foundations.

The outlet serves both local residents and people outside the community seeking information about Breckenridge and Stephens County, including potential new residents and businesses. They chose the non-profit structure to maintain local control of news coverage while minimizing the financial burden on the community.

In addition to regular news coverage, the Breckenridge Texan also offers:

weekly newsletter that delivers a roundup of recent stories via email every Monday
