Free tire disposal service to be offered locally on Oct. 4-5
Stephens County residents who need to get rid of old tires will have an opportunity to do that next weekend when the Leon Bosque Resource Conservation and Development Council hosts a free tire disposal event.
Passenger and truck tires will be accepted at the Stephens County equipment yard, 300 Dallas St., from 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Oct. 4 and 5. The tire disposal service is for Stephens County residents only, and those participating must show proof of residency (driver license, water bill or electric bill with your address).
The service is for individuals only; no tire businesses will be allowed to dispose of tires. No farm tractor tires or rims will be allowed, only passenger and truck tires.
The tire disposal is sponsored by the Leon Bosque RC&D with penalty funds from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality enforcement actions.
The Leon Bosque RC&D is a member of the Texas Association of Resource Conservation and Development Areas, a nonprofit organization focused on assisting rural communities in Texas. The organization works through a network of 13 individual Resource Conservation and Development Councils across Texas to implement environmental and community development projects in small towns and rural areas. They provide leadership training, grant research and direct financial assistance through various local, state and federal partnerships to improve quality of life for rural citizens and the environment.
Through an agreement with the TCEQ, the Texas RC&D receives funds from enforcement actions to solve environmental problems across the state, such as tire disposal, illegal tire and trash dump removal, household hazardous waste and electronic waste collections, septic systems for low income households, public water supply upgrades, and clean school buses.
Several years ago, the Leon Bosque RC&D provided a trailer that was used in the removal of more than 1,000 tires at an illegal dump site on North Jackson Street.
