Ricky Chaney, age 67, of Breckenridge, passed away Wednesday, August 7, 2024. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Sunday, August 11, at Morehart Mortuary Chapel. Burial will follow at the Breckenridge Cemetery under the direction of Morehart Mortuary. Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday, August 10, at Morehart Mortuary.

Ricky Lee Chaney was born in Breckenridge, Texas, on September 1, 1956, to Booter and Patsy Chaney. Ricky lived in Breckenridge his whole life, where he built his own successful plumbing business, Ricky Chaney Plumbing. He was a lifetime Buckaroo and was mean green through and through. He loved Breckenridge and his Bucks! On December 31, 2018, he married Virginia Moreno during a beautiful New Year’s Eve celebration in Fort Worth. Ricky loved life to its fullest and enjoyed the small things. He barely missed a Wednesday night poker game with his friends that were so special to him. He loved hunting, fishing, and playing golf. Ricky was always there to lend a helping hand to people in need and was always positive and had a smile on his face. He always had time for friends and family, no event was too big or too small. You could count on Ricky to speak his mind and he wouldn’t sugar coat his opinion. In November, Ricky was diagnosed with cancer. With Ginia never leaving his side, he fought a long hard battle. He passed peacefully surrounded by people who loved him, with his wife Ginia and daughter Misty holding his hands.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Booter and Patsy Chaney; one sister, Diane Sikes; one sister-in-law, Kay Chaney; one brother-in-law, Johnny Diaz.

Ricky leaves behind his wife, Virginia Chaney of Breckenridge; his daughter, Misty Brady and husband CJ of Fort Worth; three sons, Tyler Moreno, Cory Moreno, and Logan Moreno and wife Adrian; his grandchildren, Harper Lee Brady, Dillion Moreno, Aydan Moreno, Landon Moreno and Camdyn Moreno; two brothers, Calvin Chaney and Marvin Chaney, both of Breckenridge; one sister, Trudy Diaz of Fort Worth; his aunt, Sue Chaney; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to Meals on Wheels and may be left at Morehart Mortuary.

Condolences may be made online at www.morehartmortuary.net.

Help support the Breckenridge Texan’s local news coverage mission

The Breckenridge Texan, a non-profit news outlet serving Breckenridge and Stephens County, Texas, has launched its annual NewsMatch fundraising campaign, running through Dec. 31, 2024.

As a non-profit news outlet, the Breckenridge Texan depends on donations, in addition to ad sales, to fund daily operations, including website costs, freelance writers, and basic office expenses. The organization aims to raise $4,000, which could be tripled to $12,000 through various matching programs, including the NewsMatch program and the Rural Partner Fund, which is supported by several major foundations.

Founded in 2017 by journalists Tony Pilkington and Carla McKeown, the Breckenridge Texan provides daily local news coverage, weekly newsletters, photo galleries, a community calendar, and obituaries. The outlet serves both local residents and people outside the community seeking information about Breckenridge and Stephens County, including potential new residents and businesses. They chose the non-profit structure to maintain local control of news coverage while minimizing the financial burden on the community.

In addition to regular news coverage, the Breckenridge Texan also offers:

weekly newsletter that delivers a roundup of recent stories via email every Monday

Photo galleries from local events
