Jimmy Bart Wilcox, 82, of Breckenridge, Texas, passed away at home peacefully surrounded by his family, Monday, August 5, 2024. Private graveside will be held later this week at Plum Branch Cemetery under the direction of the Melton Kitchens Funeral Home.

Jim was born May 19, 1942, in Breckenridge, Texas. He attended grade school in Eastland, Texas, before the family moved to west Texas, where he graduated high school from Crane, Texas, in 1960. He met Judy Smart in 1961, and they married in February of 1962, after a short courtship. They enjoyed 62 years of marriage together, welcoming three children, Lisa, Mark, and Chad.

Jim started work at a young age in the oil fields of West Texas. He spent most of his years ranching, cowboying, and doing work as a carpenter. He learned his hard work ethic from his Pa, R.N. Chalker, that helped raise him from an early age, along with his grandmother, Leona Chalker. Through his years he enjoyed, hunting, arrowhead hunting, fishing, and spending any time he could with family and friends. He could always come up with a story related to the subject at hand and were always considered to be mostly true.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George Wilcox and Merle Chalker Wilcox, and by many aunts and uncles from the Chalker and Wilcox families.

He is survived by his wife Judy Smart Wilcox, daughter Lisa and Husband Rick Johnson, Mark Wilcox and wife Tanya, and Chad Wilcox and wife Krista, all of Breckenridge; brother John Wilcox and wife Kathy, of Burnet, Texas; brother J.T. Wilcox of Amarillo, Texas; and, sister Jana and husband Ralph Johnson of Thorndale, Texas. He is also survived by 10 loving grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, plus one on the way; and one great-great-grandchild on the way.

Jim was a deacon and faithful member of the Church of Breckenridge since 2006 and served as the church treasurer. The family rests in the comfort of knowing that Jesus was his Lord and Savior.

The family wishes to thank Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene, Solaris Hospice, and CenterWell Home Health for the care of Papa for last few weeks.

Founded in 2017 by journalists Tony Pilkington and Carla McKeown, the Breckenridge Texan provides daily local news coverage, weekly newsletters, photo galleries, a community calendar, and obituaries. The outlet serves both local residents and people outside the community seeking information about Breckenridge and Stephens County, including potential new residents and businesses. They chose the non-profit structure to maintain local control of news coverage while minimizing the financial burden on the community.
