James Edward Chaney
James Edward Chaney, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away on June 13, 2024, at his home in Denison, Texas, with his family by his side. He was born on October 14, 1947, in Breckenridge, Texas. James attended Breckenridge High School and went on to pursue higher education at Southwestern Assembly of God College.
On November 6, 1970, James married the love of his life, Betty Rosalyn Chaney, in Breckenridge, Texas. They shared many wonderful years together until her passing. Her ashes will be placed with him so they will forever be together.
James proudly served his country as a member of the Combat Trackers in Vietnam and retired from the United States Army as a Sergeant. His military accomplishments include the National Defense Service Medal, Air Medal (3rd award), Bronze Star Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, Army Commendation Medal w/v device, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal w/60 device, Good Conduct Medal (3rd award), and Vietnam Service Medal w/bronze star and 6 campaigns. His dedication and commitment were further demonstrated through his service as a peace officer. After his military career, James dedicated his life to ministry, becoming a retired minister and evangelist with the Assembly of God Church. He was also an active member of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Association and the Retired Ministers for Assembly of God Church.
James loved to talk, and ministering came naturally to him. He never met a person he did not want to talk to, sharing his faith and compassion with everyone he encountered. He also loved to fish and spend time with his family, cherishing the moments they shared together.
James was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Betty Rosalyn Chaney; grandson, Britton Swopes; granddaughter, Stormy Bell; father, Herman F. Chaney; mother, Anna Faye Grimes Chaney Mulvihill; and sisters, Mary Chaney, Dianna Campbell, Brenda Ledbetter, Carolyn Folsom, Doris Hight, and Margia Bunch.
He is survived by his son, Donnie and wife Yvonne Chaney of Amarillo, Texas; daughter, Anna Chaney of Denison, Texas; son, Westly and wife Larissa Chaney of Denison, Texas; grandchildren, Trevor Chaney, Colby and Macy McCanlies, Caleb and Micaela McCanlies, Cutter Chaney, Bethani and Luis Ballesteros, Ashton and Derrick Murry, Kaigan Weeks, Lincoln Chaney; and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 19, 2024, at Morehart Mortuary in Breckenridge, Texas. Interment will follow in the Breckenridge Cemetery under the direction of Morehart Mortuary. The family is welcoming guests for dinner at Uncle Booter Chaney’s house beginning at 4 p.m., following the services.
