Abbi Duran wins first Breck’s Got Talent competition

This year’s Stephens County Frontier Days featured the debut of Breck’s Got Talent, and Breckenridge High School sophomore Abbi Duran took home the top prize.
Duran played the guitar and sang “Something in Orange” for her entry in the competition that replaced the previous talent contest, “Breckenridge Idol.” She also accompanied contestant Preslie Malcuit on the keyboard as Malcuit sang “Never Enough.” Malcuit came in second in the talent competition. Duran, who is the drum captain of the BHS drum line, also led the drum line in a performance to entertain the crowd as the Breck’s Got Talent judges’ votes were tallied.
The third place winner in the contest was Hannah Leverton, an eighth grader at Woodson ISD. She sang “Me and Bobby McGee.”
The prizes — $700 for first place, $350 for second, and $150 for third — for the contest were donated by the local McDonald’s restaurant.
The other contestants included Courtney Overman, who sang “The Ending You Deserve;” Samuel “Rushtyme” Walker, who sang and danced to “Footloose;” and Kaitlyn Hardy, who sang “Tattooed Heart.” The pre-K dancers from Blast Dance Co. also performed as the opening entertainment for the event.
The judges were David Martinez, Audra Kennedy and Mike Davis. Heather Bronkhorst was the MC, and the contest was organized by Bronkhorst and Alycia Duran. Alycia also performed her “closed mouth singing” version of “You Are My Sunshine” during the vote tallying.
The competition on Saturday evening, May 4, wrapped up two days of activities at the Breckenridge City Park during the 2024 Stephens County Frontier Days. The Breckenridge Texan will have more coverage from the events as soon as possible.
