When the polls closed at 7 p.m. tonight, May 4, in the Breckenridge City Commission election, one incumbent and one challenger came out ahead.

Blake Hamilton and Greg Akers were elected to Place 1 and Place 2, respectively. Additionally, Mayor Bob Sims, who ran unopposed, was re-elected and the local sales and use tax was reauthorized.

The unofficial results, as posted by the City of Breckenridge, were:

Place 1

• Blake Hamilton (incumbent): 146 (91 in early voting and 55 on election day)
• Tony Patterson: 41 (26 in early voting and 15 on election day)

Place 2

• Greg Akers: 99 (56 in early voting and 43 on election day)
• Rob Durham (incumbent): 91 (63 in early voting and 28 on election day)

Mayor

• Bob Sims: 159 (103 in early voting and 56 on election day)

Local sales tax reauthorization

• For: 158 (99 in early voting, 59 on election day)
• Against: 31 (18 in early voting and 13 on election day)

The reauthorization of the local sales tax is for the quarter percent (.25%) that is used for maintenance and repair of municipal streets. The Municipal Sales and Use Tax for Street Maintenance was originally put in place with an election in 2004. The tax code authorizes cities to impose a special sales tax to fund street maintenance if the combined local sales tax rate will not exceed 2%. An election is required to be held and voters must approve the additional sales tax every four years.
