This year’s Stephens County Frontier Days will have a change to one of its regular features — instead of the singing competition Breckenridge Idol, there will be a more comprehensive contest, Breck’s Got Talent. The event will be Saturday, May 4, and the application deadline for auditions is Monday, April 22.

Since the early 2000s, Frontier Days hosted an annual singing contest patterned after the TV show American Idol. Contestants tried out, and the top 10 performed before a live audience and team of judges at Frontier Days. The 2019 competition was the 13th Breckenridge Idol. Then, there was a three-year hiatus during the COVID-19 pandemic. Last year, the event returned to Frontier Days.

This year, the format has been changed to be like the TV show America’s Got Talent, which features acts that range from singing and dancing to stand-up comedy and magic. In the national show, there are often stunts, animal acts, puppets and a variety of other performances. Likewise, this year’s talent contest at Frontier Days will include more than singing; it will be open to a variety of entertainment acts.

The Breck’s Got Talent competition will offer a $700 first place price, $350 for second place, and $150 for third place. The prizes possible through a donation by the Breckenridge McDonald’s.

To apply for an audition, pick up an application form at the Breckenridge Chamber of Commerce at 100 E. Elm St. or Blast Dance Company at 218 W. Williams, and return it by Monday, April 22. Applicants will be contacted directly regarding auditions.

Entrants must be at least 13 years old and must provide their own music (live or over the phone) and/or props. A PA system will be available, but all other equipment must be provided by the contestant.
