The Stephens County Humane Society’s eighth annual Wags and Whiskers 5K and Furry Fun Run had a local celebrity at the start line on Saturday morning: Breckenridge High School sophomore Chance Stewart, who competed in the State Cross Country Meet last month, joined the fundraising race in the City Park.

Nineteen minutes after the start of the race, Stewart crossed the finish line as the Top Male Finisher – Overall (official time: 19:09.3). The Top Female Finisher – Overall with a time of 27:58.7 was Jenna Stewart, who was competing in her first 5K. (See the complete list of runners below.)

The race started at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 9, with temperatures in the upper 40s. The annual fundraiser for the local Humane Society includes both the 5K and a shorter Fun Run. Participants are allowed to bring their pets along for the run.

All proceeds from the race benefit the Stephens County Humane Society, which works with local residents and out-of-state groups to find temporary and permanent homes for local pets needing a home.

At this year’s event, the Humane Society also offered Pooches Pics with Santa in the park’s pavilion as an additional fundraiser.
