The art work on display at the Breckenridge Fine Arts Center right now is a little more soft and cuddly than the typical exhibit. The BFAC’s 2023 Quilt Exhibition features 50 quilts, dating from about 1905 to 2023.

The quilts, all of which have a local connection, are in a variety of patterns and sizes. There are brightly colored quilts and ones with more muted tones. There are ones that have intricate piecing and quilting and ones with simple squares and traditional stitching. Some have holiday themes, and others feature traditional quilt patterns. There are quilts with flowers and quilts with stick horses, some with stars and others with the alphabet. A few feature the embroidered signatures of the quilters’ friends and family members.

Most of the quilts are machine-quilted, but 15 were hand-quilted, according to Shalon Wilson, director of the BFAC.

The quilt show will be on display in the BFAC’s main exhibit hall through Nov. 30.

The Breckenridge Fine Arts Center is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays, and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays. It is located at 207 N. Breckenridge Ave.

Ruth Taylor’s Blooming Nine Patch quilt, titled “A Mother’s Gift” is included in the 2023 Quilt Exhibition at the Breckenridge Fine Arts Center. She pieced the quilt in 2008 for her daughter Shalon Wilson, and it was quilted by Pat Edgar. (Photo by Tony Pilkington/Breckenridge Texan)

Leslie Blackerby made this quilt, titled “Fruit of the Spirit” for her granddaughter, Clara Barton, in 2021. According to the story, when she gave Clara the quilt, Clara reminded Leslie that she had a baby doll. So, Leslie made the matching doll quilt, which is also included in the exhibit.
