The Breckenridge High School Lady Buckaroos varsity basketball team had a tough start to their season, facing off against the Merkel High School Maidens and the Abilene High School Lady Eagles on Nov. 4 and Nov. 7, respectively.

In their first game of the season, the Lady Bucks played the Maidens in Merkel. The final score was 36-54 in Merkel’s favor, marking the Lady Buckaroos’ record at 0-1.

“The girls came out a little rusty, transitioning as they were from a successful volleyball season,” Lady Bucks Coach Bryan Goehring said in a Facebook post. “The girls are still getting their basketball legs underneath them and trying to figure out the new chemistry of the team. The Lady Bucks came out on the short end on Saturday but never gave up, fighting until the end.”

Zaea Ragle led the Lady Buckaroos with 15 points and nine rebounds, while Mia Castillo and Kaysi Wilcox chipped in with eight points each, along with five rebounds for Castillo and five assists for Wilcox.

The Lady Bucks’ second matchup of the season took place at Abilene High School, where they faced the Lady Eagles on Nov. 7.

“The girls’ shots weren’t falling at the beginning of the game, but the Lady Buckaroos found their legs in the second quarter and were playing a competitive game,” Goehring said online. “In the second half, the hot shooting of the Lady Eagles was too much for the Lady Bucks to overcome. The girls are going to regroup and focus the next three days at practice and prepare for City View coming in for our first home game on Saturday November 11th.”

The final score of 31-57 left the Lady Buckaroos with a 0-2 record.

Wilcox was the leading scorer for the Lady Buckaroos in the game against Abilene, contributing 15 points and six rebounds. Ragle also had a solid performance with 10 points and seven rebounds, while Karsyn Smalley added four points and collected eight rebounds, reflecting the team’s all-around effort.

With their record at 0-2, the Lady Buckaroo varsity basketball team is gearing up to face Wichita Falls’ City View High School Lady Mustangs in Breckenridge, with the game scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 11, at 12:15 p.m.

The BHS boys basketball season will start with a scrimmage on Friday, Nov. 10, and the first regular game on Nov. 17. See the Buckaroos’ basketball schedule below.
