Gov. Greg Abbott has appointed Phillip Gregory to fill the unexpired term of 90th Judicial District Court Judge Stephen E. Bristow, who retired at the end of September. Bristow will swear in Gregory at 8:45 a.m. Monday, Oct. 16, in the Stephens County courtroom.

According to a news release from the governor’s office, Gregory will serve as the district judge in Stephens and Young counties for a term set to expire on Dec. 31, 2024, or until his successor is elected and qualified.

Gregory, who lives in Graham, has been the assistant district attorney for the 90th Judicial District Attorney’s Office since 2016.

Prior to serving as an assistant district attorney, he was an attorney in private practice for 15 years. He is a member of the State Bar of Texas and the Young County Bar Association. He is an officer for the Young County Museum of History and Culture, member of Lions Club International, and a volunteer for the Possum Pedal Bike Ride.

Additionally, he is a former judge for Teen Court in Breckenridge, former coach for the Graham Youth Basketball Association, and a former volunteer for Remembering Wyatt Dale Water Safety.

Gregory received a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of North Texas and a Juris Doctor from Texas Wesleyan University School of Law.

Bristow, who was first elected to the judge’s position in 2012, will continue to serve as a visiting judge as needed.

At Monday’s Stephens County Commissioners Court meeting, County Judge Michael Roach said that Bristow will likely be serving as a visiting judge for some upcoming criminal cases because Gregory was the assistant district attorney for the cases and will have a conflict of interest. Initially, Gregory will be overseeing civil cases and has said he will hold court in Stephens County two days a week, Roach said.
